По словам Набокова, первый черновик романа был написан «за две недели восхитительного возбуждения и сдерживаемого вдохновения» {112} в 1935 году. Роман печатался в 1935–1936 годах в «Современных записках» (№ 58–60), а в 1938 году вышел отдельной книгой в Париже. Более двадцати лет спустя на вопрос критика: «К какому из ваших романов вы питаете наибольшую привязанность, какой ставите выше других?» — Набоков ответил: «Наибольшую привязанность — к „Лолите“, выше всех ставлю — „Приглашение на казнь“». {113} Роман сразу обратил на себя внимание русской эмигрантской критики, которая сочла его одним из наиболее удачных произведений молодой эмигрантской литературы. О романе писали В. Ходасевич, П. Бицилли, С. Осоргин, В. Варшавский и др. Подробное рассмотрение этих критических отзывов заслуживает отдельной работы. В виде вступления к настоящей главе я ограничусь лишь кратким перечислением основных идей трех критиков. С литературоведческой точки зрения наиболее ценные открытия содержатся в статьях П. Бицилли. В статье «Возрождение аллегории» {114} Бицилли провел ряд интересных параллелей между Набоковым и русскими писателями XIX века: Гоголем, Достоевским, Салтыковым-Щедриным. Отвечая на шаблонные выступления русской эмигрантской критики, которая неоднократно отмечала «нерусскую черту» в творчестве Набокова, {115} Бицилли указал на «родимые пятнышки», {116} которые свидетельствуют о связи «Отчаяния» и «Приглашения на казнь» с традицией русской литературы XIX века.
