If it were up to me rather than to my editor, this chapter, like a painter's preliminary sketch, would be a sort of ébauche , in broad washes of reddish brown and black, or mauve and ivory, of the tableau to follow. "There can, I think, be no question that Nabokov is and will remain a prominent figure in the 20th Century canon - at least in American and Russian literature," Johnson says.
