В разные эпохи набор признаков, достаточных для признания некоторой знаковой продукции текстом, был различен, хотя, возможно, никому в Средние века не приходило в голову формулировать подобные требования эксплицитно. Можно — очень грубо — наметить линию развития нарративного текста, которая ведет от античности к Новому времени и характеризуется возрастанием значимости самой категории текст, что с неотвратимостью влечет постепенное изгнание Автора — а вместе с ним и признаков процессуальности наррации — за его пределы. Если верно, что нарратив рождался из устного повествования и моделировал его структуру (ср. включенность сведений об авторе-повествователе непосредственно в текст или — в другой модели — вообще отсутствие таковых: на обложке и титуле безгранично господствовало название, но не имя автора), то верным будет и то утверждение, что нарратив отталкивался от дискурса. Но именно отталкивался. Классики Нового времени были уже весьма стеснены в средствах самообнаружения в тексте, и А. Дюма, допустим, в этом плане не считал возможным ничего, кроме заявлений типа « мы увидим в дальнейшем» (выделено мной. — М. Д. ) («Три мушкетера», XXX) и т. п., то есть ограничивался сугубо конвенциональными средствами авторского самообнаружения. Самодостаточность повествовательного текста, безграничность возможностей непрямого самовыражения в нем осознавались все непреложнее — и все более ужесточалась модель нарратива в отношении возможностей самовыражения прямого. Эпитет суровая при слове проза у великого лирика далеко не случаен!
